How to Master Lighting for a Cozy Bedroom
A Practical Guide
When delving into interior design, many overlook lighting design which is probably one of the most important elements in your space. Not only does light allow you to see, but it also serves to set the tone of your space. A very common misconception is the less light you have, the moodier, calmer, and cozier the space feels but that is wrong. You don’t need less light sources, you may need more intentional lighting.
Most bedrooms have one source of light that tries to do all the work which makes a space look flat
There are three key elements we must consider to get this right.

GENERAL LIGHTING
General lighting is going to be the most basic light source in your room. This is what is going to light a space evenly for best visibility. You most likely already have this in your bedroom. Overhead lights are exactly this. Overhead lights tend to get a bad rep these days because it isn’t the most cozy set up. Although I agree with this sentiment, general lighting, since it lights up a space the brightest, can be really helpful when it comes to cleaning and moving around your space.
Word of caution here is that if you are simply trying to wind down, overhead lighting should not become the default. Your space should still be lit and functional without it.
If you are in a position where you absolutely hate your general lighting and you want to switch it out (perhaps you have an ugly boob light or ceiling fan that doubles as a light) by all means feel free to. Some tips for this are:
Best ceiling lights for bedrooms are flush mount (for low ceilings) and semi flush mount fixures (8-9 ft ceilings) Recessed lighting is also a great option
if you must have a ceiling fan for whatever reason, choose a slick modern one
color temp should be warm, avoid daylight bulbs. It messes with your sleep
aim for 2700k to 3000k.
Anything higher suppresses meletonin
you can use chandeliers but only if your space allows it. I wouldn’t use it in a small bedroom
Put your light on a dimmer.
If you are looking to get new lights for this, take into account your design style. Do you have more of a modern style or more traditional or something completely different. That may dictate what direction you go in.
TASK LIGHTING
Task lighting is also a very functional step in this process that creates dimension. This is where you light areas in your space that could use a bit more light. Like your closet, or your shelves. Most homes do not have this already installed.
for spaces like your closet and your shelves, consider using LED strips or track lighting if you have a walk in closet
bedside reading: adjustable wall mounted sconces, or table lamps (the bottom of the lamp shade should be at eye level when sitting up in bed for maximum usability.
vanity/dressing area: avoid overhead lighting in this area to avoid harsh shadows. Use sconces on either side of the mirror or vertical fixtures for even light
use dimmers!
ACCENT LIGHTING
Accent Lighting creates an inviting space, so far we have talked about the usefulness of lights. Now we want to highlight are most beautiful elements in our bedroom. Scan your room to see what you love and want to highlight.
Perhaps you have a beautiful textured wall or wallpaper. You can add up lighting to bring out the texture even more.
maybe you have original artwork, you can add some picture lights
Your nightstands and there table lamps can also be considered accent lighting but you can take it one step further and maybe add a pendant light instead.
Warmth is key for this step especially and pro tip: connect all accent lights to a smart plug on your dimmer.
The goal here is to make your space visible, cozy, and work on just your task lighting and accent lighting.
FIND YOUR LIGHTS
It’s that simple! Now that you have established exactly what you need, it’s time to start shopping!
Important things to keep in mind:
- It’s best to light objects and surfaces not space
- your lighting should be on different levels- ceiling, eye-level, and low
- no heavy table lamps on small tables
- Sconces, table lamps. Pendants, candles, floor lamps
- Overhead light for function, side lighting for depth, low light for mood
